The 4Cs of Diamonds

A diamond’s weight or size is expressed in carats (ct.). One carat equals 0.2 grams, and one carat is equivalent to 100 points. For example, a 0.25-carat diamond is also called a 25-point diamond.

Diamonds weighing one carat or more are described to the hundredth of a carat, making the carat weight accurate to two decimal places. A diamond’s weight is also the most significant factor in determining its value, and its price increases as the carat weight increases.

Clarity characteristics are divided into two categories: inclusions and blemishes. To grade a diamond’s clarity, it is essential to examine the number, nature, size, and location of its internal and external characteristics. The difference between inclusions and blemishes lies in their location: inclusions are inside the diamond, while blemishes are features on its surface. Generally speaking, the higher a diamond’s clarity, the greater its value.

IF  >  No inclusions are visible under 10× magnification; only insignificant visible blemishes.

VVS1 - VVS2  >  Only very small inclusions, difficult to see under 10× magnification.

VS1 - VS2  >  Very small inclusions, relatively easy to see under 10× magnification.

SI1 - SI2  >  Noticeable inclusions visible under 10× magnification.

I1 - I2 - I3  >  Inclusions are extremely obvious to a grader under 10× magnification and can be seen with the naked eye when viewed face-up.
