Diamond has one of the highest thermal conductivities among known solid materials. The key lies in its unique crystal structure and atomic bonding. Unlike metals, which rely on “free electrons” to conduct heat, diamond is an electrical insulator with almost no free electrons. Heat is conducted primarily by “phonons”—energy fluctuations generated by lattice-atom vibrations—which travel rapidly through the crystal lattice.

Diamond, also known as adamant, is primarily composed of carbon and often contains small amounts of silicon, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, nitrogen, or boron. Diamond belongs to the cubic crystal system. Each carbon atom forms strong covalent bonds with four other carbon atoms, creating a crystal structure composed of octahedral frameworks of carbon atoms. It is exceptionally hard, with a Mohs hardness of 10—the hardest naturally occurring substance and rightly known as the “king of hardness.”
